Garcinia Cambogia for Weight Loss
When it comes to looking for natural weight loss solutions, there are many different fruits and vegetables that have been recognized for their unique qualities. Garcinia Cambogia was until a few years ago considered a regional cooking ingredient on the other side of the world. However, today thanks to a considerable amount of positive press and the concentration of the ingredients into tablet form, this particular plant is now considered one of the better weight loss substances.
Over the past few years this plant has garnered considerable attention as being a source of weight loss for millions of people around the Earth. This may be primarily because of Dr. Oz, a supporter of alternative medicines and noted television personality who has promoted Garcinia Cambogia as a superb weight loss supplement to his viewers back in 2012. It was not long before Dr Oz’ statements about this substance were accepted by millions of people who then purchased Garcinia Cambogia in tablet form.
Today, Garcinia Cambogia is considered one of the most popular, all-natural weight loss supplements. But what is it, how does it work, and does it really live up to its promise?
What is Garcinia Cambogia?
Garcinia Cambogia is the scientific name for the Garcinia gummi-gutta, a plant that is native to Indonesia, although it can also be found in India along with central and western Africa. The plant resembles a small pumpkin and is usually pale yellow to green in color growing in the trees. Over the centuries the plant has been used as part of many dishes in the region, most notably in preparing curries. The sour flavor is quite appealing to many who live in this region of the world.
Although the weight loss effects of Garcinia Cambogia have been recently promoted on programs like those hosted by Dr. Oz, this substance has been suspected as being a weight loss supplement for many decades. However, it was not until the late 20th century that the first real studies were made into whether Garcinia Cambogia was truly effective as a weight loss supplement.
How Does Garcinia Cambogia Work?
The main theory behind how Garcinia Cambogia works is that the ingredients inhibit the production of a fat-producing enzyme called Citrate Lyase. In other words, this enzyme is responsible for taking the excess carbohydrates that people consume in their meals and storing the energy as fat. By reducing the amount of the enzyme in the body, the result should be that less fat is created from the presence of excessive amounts of carbohydrates.
Another reason cited for why Garcinia Cambogia works is that it helps reduce the appetite as well as the cravings between meals. When taken before a meal, there are fewer desires to cheat or eat snacks before the next meal. This means that fewer calories are consumed and the person can then lose weight if they are pursuing a healthy diet that is relatively low in carbohydrates and if they exercise on a daily basis.
The combination of appetite suppressant and preventing fat from being formed from carbohydrate consumption leads to weight loss when combined with the proper diet and exercise routines. The proponents of Garcinia Cambogia recommend that their product be used in conjunction with eating a low carbohydrate diet, although slow burning carbs that you might find in oatmeal for example are far better for the body than the fast burning type which often gets stored as fat.
Additional Claims about Garcinia Cambogia
In addition to its weight loss properties, it has also been claimed by some of its proponents that it helps to lower the LDL or bad cholesterol in the blood. Also, this substance supposedly increases the lean muscle mass in the body and controls emotional eating which is basically the gorging process that occurs in some people who are depressed. Each of these claims has yet to be fully backed by research and may simply be a side effect of losing weight which will often lower the cholesterol count in the blood, exercise that increases the lean muscle mass and balancing out the chemicals in the brain which leads to fewer episodes of overeating while in a depressed emotional state.
When taken in normal amounts, Garcinia Cambogia is safe with no appreciable side effects. However, it must be noted that one particular mixture of Garcinia Cambogia was taken off the market because it was linked to liver damage. However, that particular brand no longer exists and the ones currently available have demonstrated that they are safe when consumed in the recommended amounts.
The Evidence against Garcinia Cambogia
Although there is plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest that for many people this substance actually works, it has not enjoyed the same success rate in many trial studies. In fact, back in 1998 the first controlled study of Garcinia Cambogia was made which produced no measurable results when compared to a harmless placebo that was given to another control group.
Over the years, there have been a number of official studies that have been made of Garcinia Cambogia, but none of them have managed to replicate the results that so many people claim that it has provided for them. However, it has been noted in many of the studies, even those that did not favor Garcinia Cambogia, that the group which took the substance actually did lose weight a little faster and in the manner that has been promoted. Although in the end the groups that took the placebo also lost about the same amount of weight when stretch out over several months time.
There may be many reasons why this has happened from the control groups not consuming the right foods to help augment the results to the hypothesis that for those who really believe that Garcinia Cambogia will work means that the mind will help produce the proper results.
Whatever the case, about a million people every month continue to purchase Garcinia Cambogia tablets in the hopes of losing weight and augmenting their healthy diet and exercise program.
